Opening Schools and Keeping Them Open Will Take Everyone

Since they were initially closed to onsite instruction, the journey to reopening schools has been a long and arduous one for sure.  Over this past year, we have seen multiple executive orders and guidance documents.  To be exact, the Governor has issued 66 executive orders that include a number specific to K-12 schools.  The Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority has updated school guidance and requirements, Ready Schools, Safe Learners, and is currently at version 5.12.

I am happy to report that the first week and a half of “hybrid” at the elementary level has gone relatively well, requiring only minor adjustments in a few areas.  We are planning to return our secondary students using a hybrid model on Monday, March 29th.  As exciting as this is, we must continue to focus on what has allowed us to get to this point and what will allow us to continue the process of returning all students back to our schools full time.  Since the early days of the pandemic, we have been told, and science supports, that the following universal precautions will mitigate or reduce the potential for the spread of the COVID virus.  These include 1) the proper use of face coverings, 2) physical distancing from others, recommended at a minimum of 6 feet, 3) frequent washing of hands, 4) proper respiratory etiquette (coughing and sneezing), which implies using a tissue and if one is not available, coughing or sneezing into your elbow, and 5) isolating yourself when you are ill or exhibiting primary symptoms of the virus.

Now that we are on the cusp of having all students back in our buildings, it is critical to maintain the aforementioned practices while at school, work, home or play.  The virus is still present in our community.  Now is no time to relax our attention or practice of the universal precautions.  I ask all of our families to reinforce these practices with your children.  Together we can beat this virus, but it will take all of us working together.

Respectfully,
Chris Fritsch

Respetuosamente,
Chris Fritsch
