Superintendent Message – October 19, 2020

In April, I wrote to state leaders expressing a number of concerns regarding an extended closure of K-12 schools.  The following are just a few concerns expressed at that time.

  1. Distant learning requires a level of self-discipline and maturity supported by direct supervision,
  2. Not all households will have an adult able to provide the supervision and technology background to support students,
  3. Those times known as a “teachable” moment are difficult to replicate remotely,
  4. Most parents in our community do not or are not able to work from home and if they can, they are working!

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE)and the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) were charged with developing guidelines and requirements and later metrics that have made it impossible to open schools this fall, thus we were left with Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL)

Our families and district staff have expended much energy in trying to support our children following this guidance.  The current restrictions limit our ability to provide your children with the education they deserve.   This is not the fault of our students, their families, or the District.  The social, emotional, and economic toll of the restrictions on families across the region and state is just as significant as the effect of the current pandemic itself.

I am reaching out for your help by asking you to complete the survey at the following link(s);

Kindergarten: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MVLBBK8
Grades 1 – 5: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VJRY875
Grades 6-12: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VCW8GK3

Please note that we have three versions of the survey depending on the grade level of your child(ren).  Please complete a survey for each grade level for your students.  Your responses will help us advocate for the re-opening of schools in Pendleton and the region.

I appreciate all that you are doing as we continue to work for what’s for best for our children.

Respectfully,
Chris Fritsch

Solicito su ayuda pidiéndole que complete la encuesta en los siguientes enlaces;

Jardín de infancia: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MVLBBK8
Grados 1 – 5: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VJRY875
Grados 6-12: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VCW8GK3

Respetuosamente,
Chris Fritsch
