Superintendent Message – February 10, 2022

RE: Change to Indoor Face Coverings Rules in March

Hello Pendleton School District Students and Families,

We are sharing information regarding the announcement on Monday, February 7th, from the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) about future changes to statewide indoor face covering rules (OAR 333-019-1025 and 333-019-1015).

Due to projections that hospitalizations are projected to fall below pre-Omicron levels in the coming weeks, OHA will lift the mask requirements from the statewide indoor mask rule (333-019-1025) no later than March 31. If hospitalizations fall to safer levels more quickly, this change could happen before March 31.  For public schools, the mask requirement will be March 31.  Schools can choose to continue the mask requirement or move to masks being optional.

What does this mean for PSD schools?

  • Right now, face coverings are still REQUIRED for everyone in our schools. As part of our Layered Health and Safety Measures, the correct, consistent wearing of face coverings is crucial in helping students remain in class and in helping us reach our ultimate goal of keeping students in school every day.

What happens on March 31?

  • On March 31, the decision to require universal masking in schools will rest with decision makers in local school districts. The Pendleton School board will determine in the next several weeks how our district will operate regarding face coverings after March 31. We are currently reviewing the details of the OHA rule change, including considerations and questions that may arise from this change for our schools. At this point, the district has NOT decided on whether face coverings will be required after March 31.

How can you offer input?

  • We are seeking input from students, families and staff. The district will be sending out a survey about face coverings in PSD schools. Please look for the survey link via email soon.

The impact of this change for school districts that maintain universal masking and those that make masking optional will take time, planning and collaboration. Please be patient as we continue to navigate changes and discern what is best for the health, safety and success of our students. As always, we appreciate everything PSD families are doing to help students continue to learn and thrive.

Respectfully,
Chris Fritsch

Respetuosamente,
Chris Fritsch
