District Clarifies Mask Guidelines During School Hours

On May 19, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) clarified its face covering requirements based on updated information from the Oregon Health Authority (OHA). Although ODE eased some of the restrictions on face coverings for activities in its Ready Schools, Safe Learners (RSSL) guidance, the Pendleton School District is not going to change anything for the rest of the 20-21 school year.  Students and staff will continue to wear a face covering during regular school hours.

According to Superintendent Chris Fritsch, with only eight days of school left for students, the district does not want to change rules that administrators, teachers, staff and students will need to adapt to with such a short amount of time left in this school year. “We have been through so many changes this year and don’t want more confusion at this time, so we will finish the 20-21 year using our current rules,” Fritsch said.

The RSSL update mainly updated requirements for outdoor activities at schools, but ODE stated that the provisions are optional and school districts may still choose to require face coverings universally at all times. The press release from ODE also states that if a school is located in a community experiencing increased rates of COVID-19, the district should strongly consider maintaining universal requirements for face coverings. Umatilla County’s test positivity rate remains high.
